FSP NB S90 90-Watt AC notebook adapter with switchable voltage

Happy Day After Thanksgiving to you, or maybe Happy Black Friday!

Have you ever lost the power supply for you laptop or netbook? They can be rather expensive to replace can't they? Have you ever thought it would be great to have a spare power supply, maybe so you can leave one at home and one at the office so you didn't have to carry one with your everywhere? Do you have more than on laptop or netbook, and maybe you're thinking it might be nice to have one power supply for all of them? Well, the product I've got today for review can help with all of the above concerns.

Today for review I've got the NB S90 power supply from FSP group. This power supply isn't your normal PSU though, it's meant for laptops and can be used with netbooks as well if need be. It's not just meant for any one single product though, it features several tips that let it work with many different brands and models of laptops and netbooks. The NB S90 can replace a lost power supply, or be used as a spare, or second, or even be used to power a few different laptops you've got so you'll only need to carry one with you. It's easy to use, just swap the tips and plug it in...

A Better Look at Things:

The FSP NB S90 comes in an attractive package, there's two windows on the front that allow you to see both the power brick and the tips and you'll find lots of information listed on the back as well.

Included with the power brick is the tips, a nylon carrying bag which contains the user manual, main power cord and a velcro strap.

On the back of the box is a chart that lists the models or brand so laptops along with colors, these colors correspond to the colors of the tips to be used with each laptop.

In-line of the cord that goes from the power brick to your laptop is the voltage selection switch, there's also an instruction tag attached to the cord as well. There are two selections on the switch 15v-17v and 18v-19v. To select the voltage you need to know what your laptop or netbook uses and it's usually listed on the bottom on a label. To use the switch though is easy, just pull it out and turn to the desired voltage and then push it back in to lock it in place. It locks tightly so you won't have to worry about it accidentally switching voltages and frying your laptop.

The power brick itself looks just like any other one, it's black and has a label on the bottom, and the FSP logo is on the top.

Installation, Testing and Comparison:

It's obvious how you test a product like this, plug it into your laptop or netbook and provide power to it.

I've got one laptop, an older Dell Latitude C640, and three netbooks, an Acer Aspire One D250, Asus EeePC 900a and the OCZ Neutrino.

I was hoping to use the NB S90 with my Dell C640, but there wasn't a tip for that included, so I checked my netbooks and found that the Acer Aspire one would work fine. It's 19V power and that's one of the options of the switch and I found a tip that worked with it included in the pack.

You might be wondering about the power rating though, the NB S90 is a 90 watt power supply, but that's just the maximum amount of wattage it can produce, it can give low wattage as well.

I hooked up my Aspire One to a Seasonic Power Angel and found that under load (via Orthos Stress Prime) and charging the battery it drew about 30 watts of power, well below the 90 watts of the NB S90.

Here's a few pictures of the NB S90 attached to my netbook, in the last picture you can see there's no battery and it's powered on, the green power LED shows through the back of the netbook into battery compartment.

So it works, and works well, I just wish it was compatible with my other products as well, then it would be a bit more useful to me.

As is though, it will work as a spare power supply for my Aspire One nicely. This way I won't have to worry about losing it, I found if I don't put the PSU back in the bag with my netbook I often misplace it among the things I own and have to go digging around for it later when it's needed. It's not lost technically, I mean it's here somewhere, but now I won't have to worry to much about finding it.

Summary and Comments:

Well, getting products like these for review is nice, there's nothing really bad at all about the NB S90. It's nicely made, has a long cord, it works with many types of products and of course it works exactly as it should.

The addition of the carrying case and velcro tie is a nice touch, even though it's something small, the case does add value to the product.

I just wish it would have been able to work with more than just one of my laptops or netbooks...
