A Better Look at Things

:

The packaging for Vizo products is always cool and interesting, the Voyager package is the same, it’s an odd shaped box, that has a window in the front to allow you to see the Voyager easily.

The back of the package lists all the specs and features.

The Vizo Voyager comes packaged with screws and that’s it, no instructions are needed really, if you can’t figure it out then you don’t need it… The top, or bottom of the Voyager has a screen that acts as a the fan grill covering the two 50mm fans that cool your hard drive.

The Voyager itself is made of aluminum and looks nice and sleek, Vizo included a pass-through Molex connector so you won’t loose any power connections when using it. There is no fan grill on the under side of the Voyager, this is the side that is against your hard drive.

The Voyage is fairly thick actually, so it might take up an extra HDD slot depending on your case configuration.

Being aluminum, the Voyager itself will help dissipate heat from your hard drive, Vizo also included cooling fins along the sides of the Voyager as well to insure things stay cool.

The Voyager is well made and solidly built, it is a bit larger than other hard drive coolers I have seen, so this has to be taken into account when deciding where to install, and if you have the room for it. It could take up another hard drive slot easily in any case, so depending on how many drives you have this may or may not be a problem.

Installation, Testing and Comparison

Installation of the Voyage is very simple, just four screws are needed. There are slots built into the Voyager instead of holes, so it will be compatible with any 3.5 hard drive. The slots also allow for the Voyagers position to be adjusted for maximum cooling efficiency.

The hard drive you see in the picture has Revoltec cooling mounts on it, these cooling mounts also act as a 5.25 bay adapter as well, allowing me to mount my HDD in a 5.25 bay. Just makes thing easier for me when swapping etc..

The hard drive is a Seagate 7200.7 40 Gig IDE drive and it uses the standard Moles connection for power, so I can fully utilize the pass-though connection to power the Vizo Voyager and my hard drive at the same time.

It looks nice and installs very easily but just how does it perform? Well a few days ago I reviewed another hard drive cooler from JetArt (review HERE) on the same hard drive, so I figured that would make a nice comparison to see the performance of the Voyager compared to another product.

Well we can see that it does cool the hard drive, but not quite as good as the JetArt HDD cooler does though. I believe this could be because of the fans grill is a screen, screens do not promote good airflow, if anything they impede it significantly, and also because of the overall design of the Voyager, the ends of the Voyager are essentially closed off, I think if they were open this would allow air to to flow more freely from the cooler.

If we look back at this picture you’ll understand what I mean, the fans are essentially closed in and there really is not that much space under the Voyager for the air to escape, I think this is causing the Voyager to not be effective at cooling as it could possibly be. Also having two fans could be causing a dead spot beneath the Voyager in the center reducing the effectiveness of the Voyager even more.

Overall though, it does cool the hard drive, so it does as advertised, but I do believe with a bit or redesign work it could be an even more effective product.

Also, The Vizo Voyager is fairly quiet, I couldn’t hear it over the other fans in my system, and it didn’t seem to add any more noise either overall to my system.

Summary:

The Vizo Voyager does as it says, it cools your hard drive, and does so quietly. The installation process is very easy, and the Voyager is very well made. There are a few design flaws that I believe need to be addressed though, and it is rather large in size. That being said, I can’t be to hard on it though, it does what it is advertised to do, it cools your hard drive…

DragonSteelMods gives the Vizo Voyager Dual Fan 3.5 HDD Cooler a 4 out of 5 score.

Pros:

-Easy installation

-Looks cool

-Cools hard drive

-Quiet

Cons:

-Could be better designed for more effective cooling

-Large in size, could take up space for another HDD depending on case configuration
