A Better Look at Things

:

Of course we have the plastic clamshell packaging, my favorite kind, the kind that is sealed all around and you need to slice it open… Anyway, the packaging is very well done, a little bit of info is listed on the front of the package, and we can see the card, adapters and the USB drive through the packaging so we know exactly what we are getting.

On the back of the package we find lots of information in a couple languages along with pictures or diagrams of the various uses for the ATP Trio Professional Plus.

Opening the package we only find the USB adapter, and the Micro SD card along with it’s adapters in a specially made memory card case.

Inside of each adapter we also find blank cards as well, or slot protectors.

If you read my review of the first ATP Trio (find it HERE), then you might remember the USB card reader/flash drive that it came with, well this is the same thing and I still think it is a very nice reader/thumb drive. The main reason I like it so much is that the lid is actually attached to the main body so you can’t loose it, how come no one else can figure this out? The back of the reader opens up and you can slide the ATP Micro SD card or any other Micro SD card in there, it can then be used as a thumb drive or a card reader to transfer data.

Installation, Testing and Comparison

Installation is very simple when you are using the USB reader, just slide the Micro SD card in

then close the lid and you are ready to go.

The SD/Mini SD adapters require a bit more work, not much though, you’ll need to slide the Micro SD card into the Mini SD adapter and then that into the SD adapter.

For my main testing and comparison I used HD Tach RW from SimpliSoftware. For my first set of tests I tested the Micro SD card inside the USB adapter and put it up against some other USB drive and another Micro SD card I have inside the same adapter. I wanted to see if the adapter made any difference in the speed and I also wanted to know how fast it was compared to other USB Thumb drives as it can be used that way as well. Click it to see the big picture..

You can see it isn’t the fastest of the bunch and I didn’t expect it to be, it is not a dedicated USB drive after all, it was just for a comparison to get an idea or feel for the ATP Micro SD as a thumb drive. It did come is with the second fastest Random Access speed, and beat out the Sandisk Micro SD card in the same USB adapter.

The next set of tests used the same HD Tach software to test the speeds compared to other standard SD cards I have on hand, and again to the Sandisk Micro SD card, using the same adapters.

For the most part we can see that the speeds are all basically the same, with vary little variations that would never be noticeable in real life. I believe the reason the results are so close as it is the limit of the card reader itself, but I could be wrong… it has happened before, me being wrong that is….

As for the speed rating that ATP gives this Micro SD card, they rate it at 80x or 12mb/s, I ran other tests and the highest I could hit was a little over 9mb/s, using the SD/Mini/Micro SD adapter setup, but using the USB setup I did hit the 12mb/s mark.

Most devices that require any type of SD card, be it Mini, Micro or standard SD have their own interface, so really trying to figure out how fast the card will be in every device is pretty much impossible, what I have done here is try and get a nice idea of the performance of the ATP Micro SD card in various situations and comparisons.

I personally have one device that uses a Micro SD card, that is a Planon RC800 DocuPen portable scanner, and while using the ATP card with it I could see a noticeable difference in the time it takes to save an image to the memory, as compared to the Sandisk Micro SD card.

One thing very nice about the ATP Trio system is that it is an almost all inclusive setup, say you are out taking pictures with a camera that uses SD cards and you run out of space, well just pop the Micro SD in the adapter and your ready to take more pics. Then if you want to transfer the pics to your computer and you don’t have a card reader you can use the USB reader.
