Gelaskins for iPhone 3G and 15″ MacBook Pro Review

Installation

For the MacBook Pro, I received Gelaskins named – Motherboard by Derek Prospero and Osteology by Steven Daily. While, for the iPhone 3G, I sampled the Exchange by Brian Despain and the Enamored Walk by Alberto Cerriteño.

Application involves removing the Gelaskin from backing paper and applying it to the appropriate device.

The nice feature of Gelaskins is that they can be removed and reapplied, so even if you make a mistake with the first application, one can carefully pull it off and try again.

The application of the MacBook Pro Gelaskin was simple. Just lay it on the top cover of the MacBook Pro, then press out any bubbles. The specially scored backing allows bubbles to be easily pressed out. You do need to be wary of the sides, since the skin is slightly smaller than the perimeter of the top of the laptop. So try and lay the skin over the center of the laptop cover.

The application of the iPhone 3G Gelaskin involves aligning the camera opening and then laying the skin on top of the iPhone. With the curvature of the iPhone, there will be some initial crinkles/bubbles, which are easily smoothed out by repeatedly sliding ones finger over the area.

As one can see, Gelaskins makes any device stand out. In fact, they look down right cool.

Now the protection part is a little over rated, since the Gelaskins will not protect the device they cover from any sort of impact, they will keep them from getting scratched up.

Another neat feature of Gelaskins for the iPhone line is that they provide downloadable wallpapers that can be used in conjunction with the iPhone.

For instance they offer three choices for the Enamored Whale:

Now one thing that may concern people is that since the skin is an adhesive, will it leave a residue? The answer to that is no. 3M’s Controltac is a residue free adhesive that can be reused.

If you do plan to reuse a Gelaskin recommends putting the skin back on its liner and putting it between some books to press it flat. Also, devices with curves such as the iPhone 3G and the latest version of the iPod Nano will become more difficult to flatten after having been used.

I found the combining the Gelaskin for iPhone 3G with the Contour Design iSee case, makes the perfect combination of stylishness and protection for my iPhone 3G. The Gelaskin wrapped iPhone 3G fits perfectly in the iSee.
