Ideazon Reaper Gaming Mouse

If you are into gaming then I am sure you know the name Ideazon, they make some awesome gaming keyboards, and other great products as well. Today for review though I have their gaming mouse named the Reaper, and it is one great mouse. The trend in performance mice has been to use laser sensors, but the Ideazon Reaper uses an optical sensor, something I found a bit odd actually, since pretty much everyone else uses lasers. The Reaper features the ability to change dpi up to 1600, and has three buttons on the left side, something I haven’t seen before in a mouse. The Reaper gaming mouse is a nice stylish black, and performs very well, so read on to learn more about this great little mouse…

A Better Look at Things

:

The packaging for the Reaper is very attractive and bright, on the front we can plainly see the Reaper itself though the side cutout in the box.

The back of the box has the same cutout section allowing you to see the back of the mouse as well. The back of the package also features a very nice diagram, and close up shots of the important stuff…

The Ideazon Reaper does not come with much, just the mouse and a mini-cd with the software and drivers on it. The Reaper does feature a gold plated USB connection to make sure it does not miss a beat…

The Reaper itself is all black, and features the standard right and left click button with the scroll wheel. There are three buttons on the left side, normally there might be two buttons there, usually set for forward and back for use in a browser, but the Reaper has a third button as well, all of which can be programmed to do quite a few things.

A Better Look at Things

:

The Reaper has a semi-smooth surface, a very faint texture so you can get a grip and keep it. You can see that the center section and the buttons do have a bit of a different texture to them, to allow for an even better grip on the more important areas of the mouse.

There is a small button located directly behind the scroll wheel, this is for changing the dpi or resolution of the Reaper. The scroll wheel itself is fatter than most, a nice feature actually; the left and right buttons are actually rubber coated to make them non-slip.

The Reaper is shaped a bit different than other mice out there, it has a kind of swoosh look to it, it is more curved to fit your hand better. In the center of the mouse is also the Ideazon logo which lights up red when powered up, you’ll see that in the next section.

The bottom of the Reaper has teflon feet that promote less friction, so you can get maximum speed across most surfaces. Looking at the bottom we can also get a good look at the optical sensor, and see other identifying information listed on the label as well.

Installation, Testing and Comparison

Installation is fairly simple, you don’t have to install the software, but if you want full functionality of the Reaper it is advised to do so. Once everything is installed you can open up the interface and configure the Reaper how you want.

The Reaper software does put an icon in your taskbar that you can click on to access the configuration menu, doing that brings you to the button configuration screen. Here you can change most of the buttons, and the double click speed of the Reaper.

The second tab is labeled ‘Roller Menu’ this feature is really cool and useful actually, you can set one of the buttons to activate the Roller Menu when pressed. A small Windows looking box pops up with some icons in it, these are essentially shortcuts to programs. Ideazon has nine of them pre-programmed in for you, but you can add nine more if you wish so you can have a total of 18 shortcuts, literally at your fingertips. It really is a very cool and useful feature to access any programs that you use most often instead of filling the quick launch bar with them.

The is of course a tab to configure the scroll wheel, and one for movement configuration as well.

The DPI tab will allow you to configure the DPI settings of the Reaper. The first option if chosen sets the DPI button to toggle between three of the preset DPI mode, 400, 800 and 1600 DPI. The second option allows you to set the mouse at one DPI settings only and not have to change it at all. The third option is rather cool, it allows you to change it so that you only switch between two DPI modes, instead of going through all three to get what you want. I found the last one the most useful and set my mouse at the 800 and 1600 DPI setting, I never really use the lowest resolution anyway. When you change DPI settings a little shield looking thing pops up in the to right corner of your screen with the current DPI listed.

The last tab on the menu is you standard ‘About’ tab letting you know what version of the software you have installed.

Oh and here’s a picture of the Ideazon logo lit up on the Reaper when it is powered on.

I already covered one of the cooler features of the Ideazon Reaper, the Roller Menu, but trust me it is really cool. When I first saw it I thought it was a bit gimmicky, but then after actually using it a few times I found it very useful. You can essentially put 18 shortcuts at your fingertips for almost instant access. Yes you could stick these in your quickstart bar, but that’s a lot to put down there. It really useful if you have a few windows open, you don’t have to minimize them to access a shortcut on your desktop, you just hit the Roller Menu button and up pops the menu on top of whatever you are doing. Overall, a very useful feature I think.

I tested the Reaper on the Ideazon FragMat mousepad (review soon), the IceMat 2nd Edition, and an Xtrac cloth pad, and even my desktop. I found the Ideazon Reaper to work fine on all surfaces, tracking was superb for everything I did.

The Reaper itself feel a bit smaller than other mice out there, but after using it a couple days I got used to it and it is actually very comfortable to use. The teflon feet do really work well, making the mouse just glide across most any surface. A side note though is that the Reaper is a bit lightweight compared to other mice I own like the Logitech G5, and MX1000, I personally prefer a bit of a heavier mouse, others might like how light it is though.

The default settings of the buttons did need to be changed though, they had the Roller Menu set to the middle button, where normally the Browser Back button would be, that had to be changed. The buttons themselves are fine, just the right size, except the third button is set back a bit farther making you have to bend your thumb a bit to get to it, this isn’t a bad thing though as you can’t really accidentally hit it.

All of my mice I use have laser sensors in them, so I was very curious as to what it would be like going back to an optical mouse for gaming and honestly I really could not tell any difference between them. It could be because the Reapers optical sensor is a bit higher end than other optical mice I own, allowing it to process data much faster than the older or cheaper optical sensors out there found in some mice.

All in all I found the Ideazon Reaper great for everything, it works well in games and is great for everyday general use as well.

Summary:

The Ideazon Reaper is not only an excellent gaming mouse but a great all around mouse as well, the Roller Menu feature really adds to the function of the Reaper making it more than a gaming mouse. Even though the Reaper bucks the gaming mouse trend and has an optical sensor, I found no real difference between the optical sensor of the Reaper and the laser sensors of other gaming mice I own. Overall the Reaper is an excellent tool for gaming and standard use, with a couple small improvements the Reaper could be the perfect all around mouse…

DragonSteelMods gives the Ideazon Reaper Gaming Mouse a 4.5 out of 5 and our Recommended Award as well.
