Multislot Card Reader / Writer in Cosmetics Case

I’ve checked out quite a few card readers in my time, but never one quite like this. Companies are always trying to make gadgets blend in more with our everyday objects, but I think this is the first ‘girly’ type product I’ve reviewed. Sure it’s a gadget, it’s a card reader and writer after all but they’ve taken that and basically stuck it into a cosmetic case so it would look right at home in a womans purse. I’m guessing this is an attempt to attract female consumers, but since I’m a guy I can only tell you the ‘manly’ stuff about it, like its read/writes speeds etc… So continue on to check out this most interesting product…

A Better Look at Things

:

The first thing that struck me about this product is that it come in a big old box compared to its tiny size, talk about packaging overkill… Of course as one would expect there’s lots of information on the package about the product inside. Once thing I noticed is that the package mentions that it even includes a mirror?!? but there was none, but if there was that might make it all that more attractive to the females out there!

In the big packed is just the card reader, nothing else is needed as it’s plug and play on newer operating systems. It’s made of hard plastic and obviously it’s a blue colored compact, it does have the name Dtech on the top and under that ‘multislot card reader/writer’

On the bottom we find four rubber feet and the USB cable, it’s actually fairly long considering the size of the case.

Opening the compact up we find the reader/writer inside! There are three slots with labels above them to let you know where to stick what. One thing nice about this is that you can read/write microSD cards without an adapter, come sin handy since most cellphones utilize that media.

Installation, Testing and Comparison

The reader itself seems very well made and crush resistant so your card will be safe inside when closed, but I noticed one small problem, the rubber feet aren’t really attached and keep coming unglued… not a big problem really, just more of an annoyance that some super glue could easily fix.

When plugged in the reader has a blue LED that lights up, and when a card is inserted it changes to a purplish/pink color and then blinks red when reading the cards.

For testing I put it up against my Ultra Stackable Card Reader to get a comparison. I used HD Tach RW from SimpliSoftware to test out one of my PNY SD Cards.

Here’s the screenshots from HD Tach, the first is the Ultra Card Reader and the second is the Compact reader:

And to make it easier to compare them here’s a nice neat graph of those results:

Random Access scores are ‘lower is better’ and the other are ‘higher is better’. As you can see both reader are pretty evenly matched, expect the Ultra reader excels in the Average Read Speeds, but the Compact writes faster and has a faster Random Access speed

Summary:

Overall it’s not a bad little gadget, it has very comparable read/write speeds and it seems well made, besides the feet falling off that is… but they’re just little rubber nubs anyway.

The price is low as well, and it is a fairly attractive product, and I like the fact that you can close it with your card inside, so it doubles as a card case as well.

DragonSteelMods gives the Multislot Card Reader / Writer in Cosmetics Case a 4.5 out of 5 score and Recommended for all the women out there who feel the need to

-Fast

-Small, portable and lightweight

-Built in USB cable

-Can store cards inside
