Philips DVP3140/37 DVD Player with DivX Playback

Recently my DVD player died, I paid $15 for it after rebate and got three years out of it, not bad at all when you’ve got children who use it quite often… So I don’t need all the super features of the uber high end DVD players out there. I went in search of another ‘cheapie’ DVD player and I found a few under $30 but I settled on one that cost $35 from Philips. It’s the model DVP3140/37 and it has quite a few features actually, but what really made me get this particular one was that it has Divx playback, and it’s small size. I was surprised to find a DVD player with Divx functionality at such a low price, and I’m completely happy with it…

Philips DVP3140/37 DVD Player with DivX Playback

Model: DVP3140/37

Simply plays it all

Your dream player with flawless, true-to-life picture quality and the ability to play virtually any disc! The Philips DVD player delivers your movies and music entertainment experience.

Features:

Brings audio and video to life:

-12-bit/108MHz video processing for sharp, natural images

12-bit Video DAC is a superior Digital-to-Analogue-Converter that preserves every detail of the authentic picture quality. It shows subtle shades and smoother graduation of colors, resulting in a more vibrant and natural picture. The limitation of the usual 10bit DAC become in particular apparent while using large screens and projectors.

-192kHz/24 bit audio DAC enhances analogue sound input

192KHz sampling enables you to have an accurate representation of the original sound curves. Together with a 24-bit resolution, more information is captured from the original analogue sound wave form, giving a much richer audio reproduction.

-High quality outputs for analog and digital audio

-Progressive Scan component video for optimized image quality

Progressive Scan doubles the vertical resolution of the image resulting in a noticeably sharper picture. Instead of sending a field comprising the odd lines to the screen first, followed by the field with the even lines, both fields are written at one time. A full image is created instantaneously, using the maximum resolution. At such a speed, your eye perceives a sharper picture with no line structure.

Plays all your movies and music:

-Plays CD, (S)VCD, DVD, DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW

-DivX Certified for standard playback of DivX videos

With DivX support, you are able to enjoy DivX encoded videos in the comfort of your living room. The DivX media format is an MPEG4-based video compression technology that enables you to save large files like movies, trailers and music videos on media like CD-R/RW, and DVD recordable discs.

-Plays DivX, MP3, WMA and JPEG digital camera photos

Multi-format playability allows you to play most file formats for maximum listening and viewing pleasure, including MP3, WMA, JPEG and the popular DivX digital media format. DivX playback enables you to play and share compressed high quality DivX video content beyond your computer.

A Better Look at Things

:

The Philips DVD player comes in a standard cardboard box with the DVD player packed inside protected with styrofoam. Included with the DVD player is a remote, batteries, audio/video cables and the instruction manual/warranty information.

The DVD player itself is sleek and thin, at first I thought it was a slot loading player, but it’s just as very thin tray. The bottom has rubber feet to prevent slipping and marking furniture as well.

The back of the player has a few connections, nothing major, just the basic stuff:

-Analog audio Left/Right out

-ComponentVideo out Progressive

-Composite video (CVBS) output

-Digital coaxial out

The remote as well is basic, with just the standard features, enough to get the DVD playing and navigation controls.

The front only has a few buttons as well, to the left of the DVD tray is the power/standby button, to the right of the DVD tray is the rudimentary display, and then the play/pause and stop button.

Installation, Testing and Comparison

Installation is easy, you just need to figure out which connection you’ll be using and hook it up. I powered it on and it worked just fine.

As I mentioned the DVD tray is very thin, a bit to thin for my tastes, having children I can see this possibly being the first thing to break. Other than that though the player is very lightweight and seems well made.

The player has basic functionality to play our DVDs and other types of media. It’s compatible with both types of DVDs, and of course will play CDs in the form of VCD and SVCD, and it also plays Picture CDs and Kodak Picture CDs.

According to the specs it will play MPEG1, MPEG2, DivX 3.11, DivX 4.x, DivX 5.x, DivX 6.0 and it can play both PAL and NTSC discs.

Picture quality is fine, as can be expected for a low-end player, and it boots up fairly fast, it didn’t seem to have any problem recognizing any discs that I put into it. If you have an HDTV or something of the sort you might not want this, but it does feature progressive scan and video upsampling.

Overall it’s a great basic DVD player, and the price is just right!

Summary:

For what it is I think it’s a great DVD player, if you don’t need all the super-uber features and just want something to play your DVDs then this is it. It’s compatible with just about everything, and the added Divx functionality is a nice bonus.

The price is just right, and I would have expected to pay more for the Philips brand, especially with the added Divx compatibility.

DragonSteelMods gives the Philips DVP3140/37 DVD Player with DivX Playback a 5 out of 5 score and our Recommended Award as well.
