Evercool Cool Wheel HDD Cooler

Hard drives are one of the things that most people don’t think about when they think of cooling their computer, but they need to be kept cool as well. Take it from me, I’ve had a couple die on me, and while I’m not sure if it was heat related or not, I can’t help but wonder if it was and I had an active cooling solution on my drive I could have avoided a lot of hassles. So, today for review our friends at Evercool have sent us over their Cool Wheel hard drive cooler, the Cool Wheel is a bit different than other HDD coolers I have seen, this one features dual blowers instead of conventional fans like others out there today.

A Better Look at Things

:

The packaging for the Evercool Cool Wheel is very bright and attractive actually, it is the semi-clamshell type, with plastic on the front and cardboard on the back, easy open anyway…

The back of course features all the specs and installation instructions for the Cool Wheel.

Opening up the package we only find the Cool Wheel itself and a pack of mounting screws.

The Cool Wheel is fairly attractive, can’t really go wrong with a black and red coloring theme.

The top is transparent in some spots so you can see the fans or blowers through it.

Flipping over the Cool Wheel we can get a good look at the actual blowers themselves, they are slightly off-centered to insure good cooling of your hard drive.

The sides of the Cool Wheel are semi-transparent as well allowing you to see the fans spinning.

Both ends of the Cool Wheel are open to allow hot air to escape.

The Evercool Cool Wheel is very well made, it fell sturdy and fairly heavy for it’s size. Although it is a bit high, and might interfere with another hard drive mounted near it.

Installation, Testing and Comparison

Installation is simple, four screws and your done, the Cool Wheel mounts to the bottom of your hard drive to the pre-existing screw holes.

Once mounted you can see that it makes you hard drive fairly large, and depending on your case configuration might not allow you to install another hard drive in the space below it. The Cool Wheel does include a pass-through Molex connector so you won’t loose any connectors.

Ambient room temperature during testing was 19.1C. I used FanSpeed to get the temperatures of my hard drive before and after installing the Evercool Cool Wheel.

Temps:

Without Cool Wheel: 25C

With Cool Wheel: 22C

Well you can see it does work as it is supposed to, three degrees cooler is better than nothing, and I think having a supply of fresh air can be a good thing as well. The noise level is actually very low, when everything else is running you can’t hear the Cool Wheel at all, it does not add any extra noise to the system.

Summary:

The Evercool Cool Wheel does as advertised and does it quietly. Having your hard drive running cooler can only be a good thing and if there is no added noise then why not? It is fairly large and may interfere with the placement of your hard drive and may not fit at all in some cases so that does need to be taken into account when thinking about purchasing something like this, but this is the same for all hard drive coolers I have ever encountered. Overall it’s a great little product, that is made well and should keep your hard drive cool for a long time.

DragonSteelMods gives the Evercool Cool Wheel HDD Cooler a 4.5 out of 5 score.

Pros:

-Easy to install

-Looks cool

-Fairly quiet

-Cools as advertised

Cons:

-May not fit all cases, depending on HDD mounting system
