Vizo Ninja Notebook Cooler

Yesterday we took a look at a passive, multi-function notebook cooler, today for review I have the Ninja from Vizo. It is a notebook cooler as well, but it features an all aluminum construction with two silent cooling fans that actually do help cool your laptop. I’ve had some experience with Vizo products in the past, in fact I own some of them so I know the quality of Vizo is excellent. The ninja from Vizo looks very cool, and is as silent as a Ninja, so it is very aptly named. Read on to check it out…

A Better Look at Things

:

Well first we have the packaging, the box for the Ninja is very well done, it is nice and professional looking. The front has a picture of the Ninja on it with a few features listed.

The back of the box has full specs and features listed along with another picture of the Ninja.

They even included a nice carrying handle to make it more portable.

Opening the box we find the Ninja is packed nice and snug in styrofoam.

Included with the Ninja Notebook Cooler isn’t too much, just a bag with the USB power cable. I guess instruction aren’t really needed here, it’s not hard to figure out what to do with it.

Continued:

The Ninja is made fully of aluminum, this makes it light and helps the cooling of your laptop. Aluminum makes a nice heat conductor as we all know. In the center of the Ninja is the logo, while in the upper right corner we find the Vizo logo, the two 70mm fans even have the Vizo logo on them as well.

Speaking of fans, there are two of them, the nine bladed curved style. The only complaint I could have is the lack of a full fan guard, I found out that if you pick it up wrong your fingers go into the fan, you have to basically pick it up by the edges…ouch…

On the back edge of the Ninja is the I/O rocker switch and the USB power connection.

The entire Ninja Notebook cooler is extremely well made, it is very sturdy, made from rather thick aluminum, but yet still very lightweight. The I/O power switch is easy to access, and the angle of the Ninja seems to be at about the perfect angle for comfortable typing, while still having enough clearance under the cooler to permit good airflow.

Installation, Testing and Comparison

Installation is very easy, just stick your laptop on it, plug it in and away you go!

I have to say that it is very quiet, I really didn’t expect it to be as quiet as it is. Lots of times companies say things are quiet, but their version of silent and mine are far apart, but the Ninja is virtually silent, just a barely audible hum that after a few minutes you don’t even notice.

The Ninja of course uses your USB port for power, and this does have it’s drawbacks as when on battery it will shorten the battery charge.

My laptop is a Dell Latitude 14.1 inch display, and it fits very nicely on the Ninja, you can see in the following picture that the power button for the Ninja is very easily accessed.

There is a little lip or ridge on the front of the Ninja to make sure your laptop stays in place, but the rubber feet that most laptops have will adhere to the Ninja just fine.

Well the real deal here is just how well does the Ninja actually cool your laptop. My laptop runs hot, even with AS5 on the CPU, so any help it can get is much needed. You can see in the first picture above that I had my digital thermometer out for testing to measure the ambient temp. It was about 20C in the room during testing.

Without the Ninja, and my laptop just sitting on the desk my temps were:

Idle: 43C

Load: 58C

Load was achieved running Prime95 for about 30 minutes until the temperature leveled off and stayed at a constant.

Using the Ninja with the fans on my temps were:

Idle: 37C

Load: 56C

At idle we see a nice drop in temps, and at load we see a small drop in temps, any drop in temps, I feel is a good thing.

One thing I did notice is that my laptops fans kicked on later than they did while not using the Ninja notebook cooler.

Typing while using the Ninja was actually very comfortable, and I already mentioned it, but it warrants another mention; the fans are whisper quiet.

I also mentioned before about the fan guards, it would have been nice it they were full fan guards, twice I stuck my fingers in the spinning blades.. yeah it took my twice to learn to keep my fingers out of spinning fans… They are mounted close to the edge, and a ‘normal’ grip for me would be to reach about that far in to pick it all up, oh well… it’s basically just common sense and not really the fault of Vizo, it didn’t hurt, just really surprised me as all.

Summary:

The Vizo Ninja Notebook Cooler is an excellent product, in quality and its performance. The only problem I found was the lack of full fan guards, but that isn’t really anything major warrant a reduction in the score, as I mentioned it is more common sense than anything on the the part of the end user. The Vizo Ninja is very well made, it is virtually silent and it did drop the temperatures of my laptop during use. It does what it is supposed to do and looks good while doing it, what more could you ask for?

DragonSteelMods gives the Vizo Ninja Notebook Cooler a 5 out of 5 score and our Recommended Award as well.
